“L’elisir d’amore”, comic opera by Gaetano Donizetti, will be performed in a full staged version produced by the University of Concepción Cultural Corporation in the Lyric Season of the Concepción Symphony Orchestra on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 July at 19:00 in the UdeC Theater.
“L’elisir d’amore” was premiered in 1832 and was an instant success for Donizetti, and even today it’s one of most popular operas around the world. The libretto was taken from an opéra-comique by the French composer Daniel Auber, and adapted by Felice Romani, who increased its pathos and added new scenes, included the most famous of all: the tenor aria “Una furtiva lagrima”.
The story of “L’elisir d’amore” is set in a small town, home of Nemorino, a simple and naïve villager who is in love with the beautiful Adina, a well-educated and kind-hearted young woman, who is courted by Belcore, a boastful soldier. The town’s monotony is interrupted with the arrival of Doctor Dulcamara, a quack who brings an elixir which, according to him, cures every possible illness. Nemorino takes the chance and asks him if he also has an elixir that can arouse love. The sly doctor tricks him to buy a bottle of liquor. In order to pay for it, Nemorino enrolls in Belcore’s army. Drunk due to what he believes is the effect of the elixir, Nemorino’s situation becomes more complicated: while Adina publicly accepts Belcore’s marriage proposal, the women in town learn that an uncle of Nemorino’s has passed away, leaving an amazing fortune to his nephew, so they all try to chase him. Finally, Adina confesses her love, and the proud Belcore leaves the town.
This staging is led by stage director Gonzalo Cuadra, set and costume design are by Germán Droghetti, and the choir is directed by Carlos Traverso. Music direction is by maestro Donato Cabrera, guest conductor of the Concepción Symphony Orchestra.
All roles will be performed by Chilean singers: Andrea Aguilar (Adina), Sergio Járlaz (Nemorino), Sergio Gallardo (Dulcamara), Ramiro Maturana (Belcore) and Annya Pinto (Gianetta).
